Literature Text

Kingdom of Somnus must you rouse me so?
Fleeting visions of beauty unattainable;
Darkest wishes held just out of reach.
Grant me peace this night I beseech.

These cascading gems in a midday sky,
Forbidden romance portrayed within
minds eye. May bring some peace, alas
But for I, not a thing but chagrin.

Perhaps the desire for endlessness
In waking life unstills my bliss,
Perhaps an unrequited kiss.
But torment it is, all the same.

This form though, is not all silver shine,
And things made enticing by design.
Beneath a darkness skulks and hides
And you, looking through trapped inside.

Breaths draw short, sleeping chest tightens.
Shadows twist, menace, and frighten.
Unconscious mind prays for skies to lighten,
Causing terror to blur and turn grey.

It seems that the end may never come,
As you cry out and try to run, The
Gaping maw pursues with grizzly breath
Snipping your heel, demanding your death.

At panics edge you flail and twist, with
Futile attempts to distance this threat,
About to succumb to the oldest debt
When stars hide, and you are finally freed.

Be they lovely or ugly and wretched,
These sleeping visions pull at our hearts
And prove to be but bothersome nuisance
'Til New day's thoughts rend them apart.
After having a dream about a love that could never be, an idea struck me: whether a nightmare or an impossibly beautiful dream, one can be feeling left tormented upon waking. This poem came from this idea.
